Liberty Cup Challenge-6/2006

June 24, 2006-The NY outrigger canoe club hosted a race around part of Manhattan. This year the weather did not cooperate with us. Severe thunderstorms and heavy rain delayed the event and shortened the races (women's, men's, mixed). I competed in the mixed race with they NY outriggers. Our race started about 1 1/2 hours late and was shortened to about 6 miles. We started under the Manhattan Bridge, paddled south around Govenor's Island (the east side), then to Liberty Island...boy does Lady Liberty look big when you paddle up to her in a canoe ;-) Then back around Govenor's Island to the Manhattan Bridge. For a crew put together last minute, without paddling with each other or even getting a game plan together prior to the race, we did good...finished in the back of the pack!!
There was a luau afterwards at Chelsea Piers that was great!!
The Miami women's team was there (that I met when paddling in Miami in February), Steven from Dallas outriggers and some others that I recognized from other canoe events.
Cousin Gayle hung out with me for the day, Aunt Cathy, Uncle John, Lizzy, et al. braved the bad weather to watch the race.
Then I missed my flight the next morning and got to see Aunt Gladys, Lawrence, and Erin before trecking back to Houston on a buddy pass from Kristen (thanks)!!!
